Who is: The Connecticut Sun
The Connecticut Sun is a professional basketball team based in Uncasville, Connecticut, playing in the Eastern Conference in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). The team was founded before the 2003 WNBA season began. The Sun was the first WNBA franchise not to be owned by an NBA owner; the team is owned by the Mohegan Indian tribe.
Case Study
The challenge
Connecticut sports fans loved their women's basketball. But on the college level. Question was, would they embrace the pro version as enthusiastically with a second year team that had little or no name recognition.
The big idea
The messaging had to satisfy the needs of two audiences. On the one hand were the moms who wanted a fun outing for their family that wouldn't blow the budget. On the other hand, there were the hard-core basketball fans who had to be convinced a WNBA team was the real thing. The idea was to break through to both audiences with the message "Excitement in Every Seat". And we made the best of our own limited budget by partnering with some big name players including Comcast and ClearChannel.
The breakthrough
In only their second year in Connecticut, the Sun sold out their opening night game and increased season ticket sales 40%.
